Where design
meets the
substrate.

Inference-based and AI-driven creative work for charities, social enterprises, and small founder-led or mission-driven businesses. Brand, identity, web, editorial — and Dahlia Studio, our tiny local AI model for creative practice.

Discipline

AI-driven creative
and brand systems

Output

Brand, web, identity,
editorial, ornament

Standard

Auditable, not vibes-based.
Looks good. Doesn't look generated.

From the practice

Studio runs on a brief, ships in cycles, audits the divergence. Auditable, not vibes-based.

The remit is wider than most consulting design practices. Identity work, web work, editorial work, branding guidelines, and a small specialism in generative and AI-augmented design — built for charities, social enterprises, NFPs, and the small founder-led or mission-driven businesses that need design that looks as serious as they are.

What makes Studio possible at this price and this pace is a specific use of AI: inference-based, scoped second-by-second, in the hands of trained designers. Generative tools draft. Human designers select, refine, ship. The output is held to the same editorial standards as a print magazine. Nothing leaves the building looking generated, even when half of it was.

The premise

AI does not replace design.
It compresses it.

The conversation about AI and design is unhelpfully binary. One side argues AI replaces designers. The other argues AI cannot do design at all. Both are wrong. The interesting answer — the one practitioners are quietly already living — is that AI compresses the mechanical layers of design while leaving the judgement layers untouched.

What does that look like in practice? A typeface decision still takes a designer. The two hundred specimen pairings that designer needs to consider can be drafted in a morning, not a week. A logo concept still takes a designer. The thirty-five rough variants that designer needs to triangulate from can be on the table in an afternoon. The decision about which one is right is unchanged. The path to the decision is shorter.

The output of that compression is not lower quality. It is more design, made faster, by smaller teams. Studio is built around that fact. The brief-to-shipped time on a typical Studio engagement is roughly half what it was four years ago, and the quality bar has not moved.

This page does not pretend AI made it look this way. It is an honest description of the discipline. The work below is held to old standards. The path to it is new.

Plate II —
Generative ornament

A pattern grown from rules — not from training data. Slow, deliberate, pleasing in a way no large model has yet produced. The discipline is mathematics, the medium is restraint.

What we do

Brand, web,
and a tiny AI model.

Studio runs a wider remit than most consulting design practices: identity, web, editorial, generative pattern systems, and a downloadable creative AI called Dahlia Studio.

Dahlia Studio

$3.99 for life · local download

A tiny local AI model for creative work. Scoped second-by-second with the user. Designed to pick up on inconsistency, but to understand imperfection as art.

Dahlia Studio runs on your machine, learns your hand, and speaks your language as you work. Pricing is a stake in the ground: three dollars and ninety-nine cents, for life, including updates. Small. Fair. Durable. A specific protest against the per-month-per-seat AI-tooling spiral.

Beyond Dahlia Studio, the division delivers brand identity systems as documented brand guidelines — typically thirty to sixty pages — that the client owns and applies in perpetuity. Logo construction, full palette with usage rules, typography with role assignments, voice, photography direction, and application templates across print, web, social, and document.

Web work is delivered as built sites. Editorial work is delivered as bound documents and digital publications. The AI specialism runs underneath all of it: generative tools daily, every output reviewed and edited by a human designer, the standard is permanent reuse.

How AI sits
inside the work.

Three honest disciplines for using generative tools without losing the discipline of design. Documented internally, applied consistently, named here for the record.

I · Compress
Use AI to widen the option set.

The mechanical work — pairings, variants, drafts, mood explorations — is where AI compresses time. Twenty options instead of three. Fifty pairings instead of ten. The triangulation is faster because the surface area is wider.

II · Select
The judgement is human, every time.

No output ships with the AI as the last decision-maker. A trained designer chooses, edits, refines, redraws if needed. The select-and-cull pass is where most of our time still goes — and it is where the quality lives.

III · Document
The system, not just the output.

What gets shipped is a system someone else can apply — guidelines, tokens, components, voice. AI produces examples; the system produces consistency. The documentation is the durable artefact.
